Welcome to this course on Credit Default Swaps.
We’ll start by going back to 1999 to see how the credit default swap market started as a means of hedging credit risk and soon morphed into a way in which credit risk can be traded.
You’ll learn the key terminology used in the credit default swap market so that you can clearly explain the actions of protection buyers and protection sellers. You’ll see that buying protection in a credit default swap is like shorting the underlying cash credit bond, and selling protection in the credit default swap Market is like going along the underlying cash credit bond.
We’ll explore some simple credit default swap trades and finally explain the difference between cash settlement, which is mostly used nowadays, and physical settlement.
